One of my absolute favorite products to use is Valerian essential oil. This is the product I would recommend if you are able to identify a common trigger for seizures in your dog. Valerian is basically a natural form of Xanax. This is not something I would recommend using everyday.
So for Howie I know he has seizures around the full moon. Starting four days before the full moon I start putting a couple drops of Valerian essential oil on his head. I also put it on his head one day after the full moon is over. This works incredibly well for us. If I have some sort of long day event come up that I know about in advance I will put Valerian oil on Howie’s head the night before and in the morning right before I leave. This helps us from him or Henry having seizures when I am not home.
I got this idea after reading one of Caroline Ingraham’s books. She is very well known for using essential oils and has her own brand that she sells on her website. Her Valerian essential oil is what I use for Howie. She also has several books and courses on essential oils. If I wasn’t able to get Valerian from Caroline’s site I would use the animalEO brand. I will post a link below to these websites that Valerian can be purchased from as well as a link to Caroline’s book that I found so informative.
I will warn you that Valerian is not a very pleasant smell. It has quite a strong odor. I cannot put it directly on Henry because of this. If you have a dog that is sensitive to strong scents maybe try testing it on a fabric collar and putting it on the dog so if they hate it and freak out you can just remove the collar.
Valerian can also be found in other forms besides an essential oil. I just have not personally ever used anything besides the essential oil. It may work just as well as the essential oil version I don’t know but it could be worth investigating for your dog.
