This may seem obvious especially if you have been dealing with seizures a while but it is incredibly important to keep a seizure log of every seizure your dog has. You are probably doing this already but I want to stress how necessary of a step this is. It can allow you to identify patterns that you might not be able to see normally. The more detail you add the better.
This is how I was able to see that my dog Howie was consistently having seizures around full moons. You might be thinking ok great maybe you do see a pattern of when seizures occur for your dog now what can I do about it? That is where I would like to help because even though I was able to see that Howie had seizures around the full moon his neurologist did not provide me any guidance on what I could do to actually help him from having any seizures. All I was told was yes that can be a common occurrence for dogs with seizures.
I don’t believe many people keep track of the weather conditions in their seizure logs and I think it is necessary because with all the pressure changes that occur in the environment it 100% can be an attributing factor to causing a dog to have a seizure. Conditions like tornadoes, full moons, solar flares are all items to keep an eye on. My general rule is if something occurs twice it can be considered a coincidence but once something has happened three times that is what I would consider a seizure trigger.
The Items I highly recommend putting in your seizure log are:
- Time of Day;
- If anything happened that was out of the ordinary that day;
- What the dog has eaten in the past 24 hours; and
- Weather conditions (ex: full moon, tornadoes, thunderstorms, etc.).
